Why I Went Back To Playing Games Primarily On Consoles

I have a confession to make, I have recently found myself enjoying video games more than I have in the past 5 years, and the reason is that I made a choice to go back to playing primarily on console. Why, though, did I do that? I have several reasons but first some history.

Most of my gaming life, apart from the Commodore 64 days and the last 5 years has been spent on console. Down the years I have had a Sega Mega Drive, Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3 and Xbox One. It was only 2017 when I got my first gaming PC. It was a mid range PC but it was not exactly cheap. I could have got a Playstation 4 and together with the Xbox One I’d still have spent less than on my PC, but I thought I wanted a different gaming experience.

I did spend a few years as a happy PC gamer but then I started to grow weary of the need for troubleshooting and tinkering needed to make games work properly. I can’t even blame being a linux gamer because Windows is like that as well, albeit to a slightly lesser extent. The truth is, I work in IT tinkering and troubleshooting all day, so when I log off for the day that is the last thing I want to do. I just want to be able to, once I finish adulting for the day, sit down and play a game and I want to do so via the path of least resistance. Consoles give me that.

Add to that the state of the PC hardware market and you can see another reason why console gaming was so enticing. I would have been due a GPU upgrade fairly soon but the prices and availability are not good. I have an Xbox Series S, a Playstation 5 and a Nintendo Switch; and I still paid less all in than I would have had I decided to upgrade my PC. That is with my buying the PS5 in the scalper market too (don’t judge me, I really wanted one).

Another key reason is that the type of game I like to play most is the JRPG so buying a PS5 over upgrading my PC was a no brainer choice as I now have access to a wide choice of JRPGs that never made it to PC, and likely never will.

I still have my PC for my current game library (with Windows installed) but I will not be buying any new games for PC and I will not be upgrading it. I have made my choice and I do not regret it for a second. I am simply a console gamer at heart who had a slight temporary detour into the world of PC gaming.
