What Have I Been Playing (Feb 2022)

Time for another round-up of what I have been playing recently, so without further ado let’s get into it. Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker We all know that I am an FFXIV fan by now, it is the only MMORPG that I have ever taken to in a big way, so obviously, I was going to play its most recent expansion. I waited until the insane queues had died down a bit and only started it in the no man’s land week between Christmas and new year, but it has taken up quite a lot of my time.

Why I Went Back To Playing Games Primarily On Consoles

I have a confession to make, I have recently found myself enjoying video games more than I have in the past 5 years, and the reason is that I made a choice to go back to playing primarily on console. Why, though, did I do that? I have several reasons but first some history. Most of my gaming life, apart from the Commodore 64 days and the last 5 years has been spent on console.

Why I Have Come to Love JRPGs

I recently published my round up of the best games I played in 2021 and in thinking about those games it was obvious that most of them are JRPGs, which prompted me to think about why this was the genre I enjoyed most in 2021. It is only in recent years that I started to get into JRPGs as I have always been into other types of games in the past, so what is it about JRPGs that I am attracted to now?

Some More Games From The Past I Remember Fondly

Last year I shared some games from bygone days that left a lasting impression on me which was a fun little exercise in gaming nostaligia so I thought I would share some more games from the past that I remember very fondly indeed. Turrican Another one from my Commodore 64 days, Turrican was a side scrolling shooter that I never actually completed (games were hard back then, or maybe I just lacked patience?

The Best Games I Played in 2021

2021 is almost over, I have played quite a lot of games this year; some good and some that were quite a disappointment. If there is a pattern to the games that I have played, it would have to be RPGs especially the japanese variety. JRPGs are fast becoming the genre of games that I am most drawn to because I find my self craving an engaging story, likeable characters and an interesting world to explore; JRPGs give me that.

What Have I Been Playing (August 2021)

It is the end of August 2021, the summer is ending and I think it is time to do another round up of games I have been playing to put off going outside in the sunshine. So, without further ado, let’s get into it. Scarlet Nexus Scarlet Nexus is the latest action RPG from Bandai Namco and, damn, it is a great game. It is set in a futuristic “brain punk” world after a psionic hormone is discovered in the human brain granting extra sensory powers and changed the world.

Why I Am Onboard With Game Streaming

It is a very unpopular opinion among “gamers” but I am quite excited about a future where streaming is my primary way to play games, and I would like to share some of the reasons why. Game sizes Games sizes are getting ridiculous. There have been examples where a game will be in the 100s of GBs in size and that takes quite a while to download. This is not a concern with streaming.

The Best Games I Have Played So Far In 2021

2021 is half over and my how things have changed since it began from uncertainty and unhappiness at work to starting a new permanent role that I am enjoying quite a lot. Anyway that is not what I am going to talk about today; I want to share the best games that I have played so far this year. Final Fantasy XIV I started playing Final Fantasy XIV at the end of 2020 and I only finished all of the mani story quests up to the end of the post Shadowbringers content at the end of June.

What Have I Been Playing (May 2021)

Time for another round-up, this time what have I been playing. It’s been a while so let’s just get into it. Final Fantasy XIV I mentioned it in my last round up (in January) and since then I have subscribed, bought all current expansions, completed the Shadowbringers story watching all story related cut scenes and reached max level with my dragoon. I also plan on buying Endwalkers later in the year.

What have I been playing (Jan 2021)

So January 2021 is pretty much done (that was one long month, January always is), so what games have I been playing this month? Well, let me tell you… Before I start I should say that it has been a difficult month due to my work situation so I haven’t played many games. Crystar I picked this up on sale after seeing a review on youtube by JRPG Jungle and I have to say I am glad I did.

My Gaming History

It is no secret that I like video games and have done for quite a long number of years, but I don’t think I have ever talked about my gaming history before hence this post. To start at the beginning, my first gaming system was my first computer, the Commodore 64. My parents got it for me as a Christmas present in the late 80s. Sidebar, my mum still tells the story of my dad setting it up in my room on Christmas eve while I was sleeping and he was half cut.

Video Games I Enjoyed in 2020

Hooray for video games! A fantastic source of escapism from this dumpster fire of a year. Here are a few of the video games I have enjoyed throughout 2020. No, not all were released this year but they were what I played. Last Epoch Let’s get this out of the way; yes, Last Epoch was on my list last year too. At that time I had played 80 hours, now I have logged over 500 hours.

How ProtonDB ratings should be

We all know that ProtonDB is a good resource to find out what games work on linux and what games don’t, but the overall rating (platinum, gold, silver etc) is pretty flawed. An example that I ran into some time back was Tokyo Xanadu EX which was rated platinum on ProtonDB but when I played it on linux I got 20 hours in and was met with a black screen and could not progress.

The games from bygone days that have made a lasting impression on me

I have been playing video games for a long time now; some have been good, some great, some not so good. There have been some games that have made a last impression on me that I still look back on fondly today. International Karate+ I played this on the C64 and I remember it fondly. Most modern fighting games come across as low skill button mashers to me but that is not what IK+ was (mostly because you didn’t have lots of buttons on the joystick, and yes I did play it with my joystick).

5 Hassle Free Games You Can Play on Linux Via Proton

Valve’s Proton is a wonderful thing, it is designed to make games on Steam with no native linux build work on linux using a mix of magic from WINE, DXVK and some other goodies. The question is, does it achieve it? Yes, for the most part it does, and it does so in a way where there is no hassle in making things work. My goal today is to share with you five lovely games you can buy, download and play right away.

Why I Prefer Indie Games

So it is no secret that I love video games, they are a great way to escape from the drudgery of 9 to 5 living by losing yourself in a wonderful story and a beautiful world. There are a lot of games out there from the latest “AAA” big budget blockbuster to the little indie game developed by a “team” of one. In the early days of my gaming journey, I was very much drawn to the big names (Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Tom Clancy games etc) but in recent years I have noticed my tastes changing.

The games I enjoyed playing in 2019

So the end of the year is upon us and I have already reflected on the music that has left an impression on me in 2019, so I would like to now reflect on the games that have left an impression on me this year. Cat Quest 2 The first game that comes to mind is Cat Quest 2. Having played and loved Cat Quest, I was really looking forward to Cat Quest 2 and, for me at least, it did not disappoint.
